What are Web Trackers?
Well no, we don’t mean these harmless guys. They are often misunderstood and hopefully not about these guys.
We are referring to website trackers which are ‘scripts’ that are deliberately written and embedded into websites we visit. With the distinct function to watch us, gather and collect data about our activity, when we should be in our most private settings. Then the trackers do their worst, they build a profile about us.
Sound creepy to you? Well it should because it is. Think about it, how would we feel if we were out walking one day in a really nice peaceful setting, maybe the national park, or just you and your family and there is someone following you and taking photos and recording your movements.
What would we call this? Not sure? Well, it’s called stalking. So why is this not acceptable out and about but it’s ok when we go online with web trackers?
Why to they do this?
It is a practice for operators of websites and their associated third parties collect and store and share information about visitors so your behaviour can be used to provide further content or create content that is based around you.
There are use cases like this where one of the popular social media sites would monitor when teenage girls deleted photos of themselves and then send them ads and targeted content about beauty products to lure them into a purchasing cycle. Why? Because they think the girls might not be feeling good about themselves, so golden opportunity to pounce and sell some product.
Some might think this is okay, well in our books it is called stalking and should be labelled as predatory behaviour. These trackers answer the question: What are Web Trackers?
